The Undergraduate Program offers a range of courses which allows graduates to fill almost any roles in the ocean engineering sector. The Program required at least 144 credits that should be finished within 8 semesters. Thirty six out of the 144 credits are taken in the first year as compulsory courses in the Common First Year Program (Tahap Persiapan Bersama – TPB). At least 24 credits must be taken in the fourth year as elective courses. Upon completion of the degree, a submission of a final project in a form of standard scientific report and an examination is required.

The Ocean Engineering Program curriculum is designed to cover 144 credits of student’s workload that should be completed in four years and divided into two levels:

 

  • Common First Year Program (TPB) (36 credits – maximum 2 years)
  • Bachelor Level (108 credits – maximum 6 years from enrolment in ITB)

Credit distribution and the type of courses for each level are shown in Table 1 – Table 5. Students are allowed to enroll in electives, which are primarly taken during the third and senior years of study. The Ocean Engineering Program curriculum is designed to first establish a firm foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering fundamentals. Once this base is established, the focus is on developing a similar base in ocean engineering fundamentals and the ability to design, perform, and analyze data from laboratory and field measurements. The design experience comes in the last year of the program. General education requirements and electives are distributed throughout the program in order to allow some variety in the courses in any semester.

The curriculum is divided by year and semester. The number of credit hours in mathematics and basic sciences, engineering topics, general education requirements and others are provided. Also noted are the engineering courses that contain design content. The credit hours and percentage of credit hours in each of the three areas are presented at the end of the table. The percentage of total credits are as follows: mathematics and basic sciences 26.3% andengineering topics 67,1%.

In ITB, the new students enter their first year into the faculty/school and then choose their program after finishing the first year. The freshmen from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FCEE) can enter the Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Ocean Engineering programs, Water Engineering and Management, and Environmental Infrastructure Engineering. In their first year, the FCEE students are provided with calculus, chemistry, physics, technical drawing,and engineering fundamental courses including computer skills development. The students are introduced to the infrastructure engineering and its sub-disciplines in Introduction to Engineering and Design I (KU1101 and KU1201) courses.

When the students enter the Ocean Engineering Program in their second year, the courses continue to build on the foundation established in the first year with additional courses in mathematics including ordinary and partial differential equations, statistics and probability, oceanography, engineering mechanics and mechanics of materials. Ocean Engineering students are also exposed to the physical oceanography (KL2205) and marine geotechnics (KL2104 and KL2204). Four credits of general education courses required for all higher education institutions in Indonesia are also served. The last two years of the curriculum are more focused to prepare the students to the core of Ocean Engineering works. While continuing on applied mathematics for ocean engineering in hydrodynamics (KL3100) and random waves (KL3200) courses, the third year students are introduced to Laboratory Experimental Methods, and ocean engineering data acquisition and analysis (KL3103). The students are also introduced to courses in structure topics (KL3101 Matrix Structural Analysis and KL3201 Structural Dynamics), underwater acoustics (KL3104), coastal processes (KL3204), and Construction Management of Ocean Structures (KL3205).

The Field Project (KL4098) is listed on the first semester of the fourth year. The course requires the students to join ocean engineering industry projects for at least for one month, write a report, and present it orally at the end of the semester. Other courses in the fourth year provide the students with the ability to design ocean engineering infrastructures, i.e. coastal structures, offshore platforms, subsea pipeline, planning ofport infrastructure, design of berthing structure, and floating structure. At the end of these courses, the students, working as groups, are required to perform and present specific design projects assigned by the instructors. The students are also provided by the course about ocean environment.

To finish their study in Ocean Engineering, the students must take four credits of final project (KL 4099), where they individually work and perform the design based on contemporary problems or issues in ocean engineering. The remaining courses (total 15 credits) in the curriculum are electives. Ocean Engineering Program requires every student to take at least 3 credits of the electives outside their program to broaden their knowledge. On the other hand, Ocean Engineering program also requires at least 9 credits of the electives are professional electives within the program.
